Naturalistic gardens are designed, immersive living landscapes, rather than simply adding native plants.
Naturalistic planting employs high-density and layered plant communities that mimic nature to increase ecological function and decrease high-input management over time. Each garden is designed to suit its site condition and microclimate, and utilize native plants as appropriate. The result is a biodiverse landscape that supports local ecosystems while offering practical benefits such as lower cost and labor input, less resource consumption, and improved water infiltration.
Our gardens don’t rely on fertile soil, annual wood mulch applications, fertilizer or herbicide. Our plants are smaller, younger and more affordable sizes that establish quicker.
Once established, the garden is designed to persist on average rainfall, only requiring supplemental water in prolonged periods of drought. By planting densely, weeds have little space to grow.
Designed naturalistic gardens are an artful version of nature. Our designed plant communities provide successional layers of perennials and grasses, deliver seasonal highlights within a permanent framework of shrubs and small trees.
